Powerful Women (Kin)

Powerful Women (Kin) is a curated exhibition led by Ngunawal artist and emerging curator Kristal Matthews (Wilay Designs), celebrating the strength, influence and creative leadership of women who shape our lives, our communities and our arts practices.

Opening at Coral Street Art Space on Ramindjeri Ngarrindjeri Country, Victor Harbor, the exhibition brings together works by Aboriginal and non-Indigenous women artists, honouring themes of kinship, identity, intergenerational learning and women’s stories. The exhibition is grounded in the influence of matriarchs - Nans, Mothers, Sisters and Aunties - whose love, care, strength and guidance continue to shape who we are and how we move through the world.

Rather than each artwork directly illustrating a single theme, Powerful Women (Kin) is unified by the women themselves. Each artist is a powerful woman in her own right, whose creativity, leadership and lived experience have impacted others. Together, the works share stories across generations, reflecting how women continue to nurture, guide and transform communities through knowledge, care and creative practice.

At its heart, Powerful Women (Kin) is both a celebration of artistic excellence and an acknowledgement of the care, strength and love that sustain our communities. It offers a space for reflection, connection and recognition- reminding us that through women, we are grounded, and through us, their legacy continues.
