Water People is a powerful group exhibition presented as part of Victor Harbor’s Winter Whale Festival, bringing together artists whose practices are deeply connected to Australia’s ocean and coastal environments. Showing at Coral Street Art Space in June – July 2026, the exhibition features work by Mark Callaghan, Rita Kluge, Gerry Wedd, David Cocks, John Ogden, Goompi Ugerabah, and Mark Rhodes. A special associated event will be held at Victa Cinema, featuring a screening of renowned surf filmmaker Tim Bonython’s Surfing Visions.
Across surf and swell, reef systems, migration routes, saltwater culture, and ancestral knowledge, the artists explore lived relationships with the sea - revealing coastal environments as places of both power and vulnerability. Timed to coincide with the seasonal stay of Southern Right Whales in the waters surrounding Victor Harbor, Water People invites reflection on our shared responsibility to protect the ocean while celebrating the profound creative inspiration drawn from water.
